Public Transport or Profit Transport?

Posted in The Prophet on August 26th, 2006 by Moleznev

Is the public transport in Singapore geared towards providing the public with affordable and cheap transport? The answer is no. Firstly, there is no competition of prices for both the operators. Secondly, unlike many other countries, there is no differentiation in prices for children and adult fares. Let me explain.

Competition between the two operators is insignificant to consumers. What the two operators in Singapore compete will be the routes each take. Competition to draw profits. Fares are not competitive at all, because both transport operators are allied in pricing under Transitlink. This is totally unfair to consumers. Prices are always going up but not down. Fuel prices do not increase all the time, it decreases as well, so why have they not decreased the fares?

When I go overseas, the public transport always differentiates children and adult fares. In Singapore however, only students in government schools are allowed to travel on concession. This is totally bullshit. How are other countries able to do it and the country with the world’s second largest land transport operator, the world’s most expensive place to own cars not able to do it?

Also, concessions are not given to all tetiary students. Not only does it upset the people, it may even cause the transport operators to lose a possible source of income. From an accountant’s point of view, it is an option which is definitely good for the companies. I do not understand why the transport operators are resisting the idea and causing unhappiness among the people. Every company would like to have money in their pockets even before they provide the service. Giving tetiary students concession is the best way to do so. Tetiary students pay the same fare as adults, except that they are allowed to buy concession passes which costs almost a hundred bucks, allowing them to have unlimited travelling on buses which is a fixed cost for transport operators. This way, everyone is happy. Stupid operators.

Starhub VS Singtel

Posted in The Prophet on August 19th, 2006 by Moleznev

Firstly, I did not really want to write this post until some idiots at HWZ forums got me so fed up because they can’t understand. Either people who study IT but do not study MBA are too cock up in the head or these people there work for Singtel. Secondly, as I said, I wrote this because some idiots are just so idiotic. Not because I am siding Starhub for any other reasons.

Compare Prices
Singnet 3500kbps costs $47(w/o GST). Starhub Maxonline 4000 costs $58.80(w/GST). With Singtel you get 30mb Email + 20mb for your supplementary Email. 2 months Virus scan for your emails. 3 months 1GB photo album. 2 months wireless outdoor surfing. Free modem (probably Alcatel or Aztech or Prolink). With Starhub, you get free Digital Voice Home/Travel. Thats about it because the promotions have just been over. If not, you probably get a surfboard modem (Motorola). Previously, they were giving away HP iPaq cell phones for $99 (usual $1099). 3 months free service. Or else you could go for a Linksys Wireless G cable modem router.

Although the Maxonline 4000 costs about $10 more, it is definitely more worth buy than the SNBB. Let me do a breakdown of the plan. SNBB 3500kbps at $47 is just a promotion price. When the contract is over, or there are price changes or speed changes, people who had already signed up for the plan will not be eligible. The freebies are crap as well. Why do you need an email you hardly use? And the space is so freaking little. Gmail has thousands of mb more storage and its stable and free. 2 months free Virus Scan for your email? Nonsense. You get those free with the free emails you subscribe online. 3 months free 1GB photo album? Eat shit. Who uses it? Even if you get to use it for 3 months with no charge, you definitely need to continue if you have photos inside. 2 months wireless outdoor surfing? Only at hotspots. And who needs it when we have WiMax at only $9.90 per month.

Lets look at Starhub. From previous experiences, MOL users should know that they always get their speeds upgraded when there are new speeds. Starhub could have done it the Singnet way by having new plans and do not bother about its old customers, but it did not. This is what I call customer value. Something SINGTEL- AN ORGANIZATION AS A WHOLE DOES NOT HAVE. So from Starhub, you get Digital Voice Home/Travel. Free voice calls when you are overseas, or in Singapore. An additional line for free! It also includes unlimited free calls! What Singtel charge for those? Starhub also uses quality products. The modem is either a Motorola or Linksys. American! What does Singnet give? Either local lousy brands or Taiwanese crap. I can gurantee its crap. Anyone who wants to know how crap Prolink is can ask Rh. The shortage of freebies at the moment is because of the end of a promotion. If theres one, Singnet can eat grass.

Finally! YouTube videos are going to work on my blog after installing this plugin. Not really that nice looking, but I couldn’t get Video Blogger to work properly. So I had to use this. Its easier to use than Video Blogger as well. I thought of changing the pixel size but couldn’t find the right one on YouTube. It uses the same pixel size. So there you are. A new video on M5 VS RS4. The M5 sucks badly.
