US versus Singapore

Posted in The Prophet on September 26th, 2006 by Moleznev

Yesterday, I had an argument with my dear friend Melisa. She refuses to accept the fact that most Taiwanese products are no good and local lecturers should change their mindset to fit the US system, instead of me changing to fit them.

Number 1 I want to stress is, I am not someone who likes to read textbooks. I am someone who likes to work on problems and stuff. That is why I can produce good projects but not good exams grades. The US education system fits people like me. PBL - Problem Based Learning (in case Melisa and Cheryl dont understand and starts to crap that I use too many abbreviations)

I do not know why she is siding with that stupid lecturer and asking me to change my mindset. It is a wrong move. Why are the richest people in the world from US and not in that super powerful China? Why is Apple able to beat Creative down flat? Why???
I think I know the reason why. Americans tend to get down to the basics before anything else. Unlike Singaporeans and Chinese who tend to make stuff more confusing than they already were, Americans do the basic stuff first. Get your basics right and not challenge people with something complicated when your foundation is not there.

And, since I’m paying for my education, why should I be changing to fit someone who is drawing the pay from my school fees? And since that person is in the US education system, why should I be changing to fit her Singapore standards education system?
Also, for US lecturers, I normally get the same grades as Ben although I study for only 1 or 2 days compared to his so many days of hardwork. That means, I am not the problem for the results of my courses with local lecturers. How can it be that I am not precise enough for US standards? It is her overly high expectations for precision!
To add to my argument with what Gaylene said, since we are not majoring in the course, the standards for marking and the questions should not be set to such a high standard. Don’t tell me different lecturer different. I hate those words. It always comes from the local lecturers. WE ARE IN THE BLOODY AMERICAN SYSTEM, STUDYING FOR AN AMERICAN DEGREE, AND NOT THE BLOOD VOMITTING UOL DEGREE. Why would I pay so much to study at UB if I’m marked like I’m in UOL. It’s 3 times the fees ok?

To add, my answer may be a bit vague by Singapore standards but I’m sure its alright by American standards. Therefore, I do not feel a need to change my mindset on answering questions but for the locals to learn from their US counterparts. If Singapore wants to be successful in claiming the world, it should follow the Americans instead of its dead brained ideas from the East.

Three Cheers to Dr Stephen Ladyman

THE road safety minister has defended the high-octane stunts performed on the BBC’s Top Gear programme and described the presenter Richard Hammond as an “adventurer” after he was seriously injured in a 300mph crash.

Some critics of the show have accused it of glamorising speed, encouraging “yobbish” driving and promoting gas-guzzling vehicles.

However, Stephen Ladyman said he was “distressed” that some people were using Hammond’s crash in a jet-powered car as “an excuse to knock the programme”.

- Reports from TimesOnline

Andy Wilman, the man credited with turning Top Gear into BBC2’s most popular programme, said he could not imagine the series returning without Hammond. Wilman also threatened to quit if the corporation attempts to ‘tone down’ the programme’s irreverent attitude and relish for speed. Presenter Jeremy Clarkson said he, too, would defy critics who ‘don’t like Top Gear and would love to see it off the screens’

- Reports from The Oberserver

Whoever who thinks Top Gear is bad, you may walk for all you like. Go back to the stone age, carry stuff around, build stuff, and do your stupid researches on foot. Do not use any machinery if that is what you say. To the BBC and its news department, shame on you for not defending your own show. Go walk with those bastards as well! Do your news reports on foot.

By now, you should have heard of Richard Hammond’s disastrous crash. But, thank god, he is alive and kicking around now. He could even look at James May and call him a C**k face.

The problem now is with the stupid tabloids which talks about nothing but whether Hammond should have attempted the stunts. Whether producers are pushing presenters too hard. What crap. Would anyone please help the three hosts and the Top Gear fans worldwide by pushing these bastards into the smoke chamber or at least knock their heads against the wall? It is the joy of doing these stunts that thrills the Top Gear presenters to push the limits. This is what they enjoy doing. Leave them alone from your criticisms.

And those environmentalists! You bastards and bitches must have waited a long time for this chance to screw Top Gear, am I right? Why should it be axed? Your stupid programs on creatures which extincts without anyone knowing should be axed! If they are not around to be seen, and used, what is the use of researching on them? If not for Hamsters’ accident, would Yorkshire Air Ambulance have raised more than a 100,000 GBP? That helps the YAA to save many more lives!

Eyes on You! O.O

Today, the mole took an unusual move to take the bus to school. What a hassle. Took me an hour. Anyway, something caught my eye while I was on bus 61. I actually saw it before last week when I also took the unusual way to school.

There were actually cameras on the bus! What the fuck is the bus operators up to? I thought it was only going to be one camera, but there were 2! I wasn’t aware of this camera thing until I saw them on these buses. When I first saw one- didn’t notice the other one- I thought it was fake, for the purpose of an advertising gimmick by Ikea as the bus was then decorated in and out of Ikea advertisements. So this was the improvement the bus operators promised? I do not know whether it is for anti-vandalising or anti-terrorists purposes, but all I know is, it is an invasion of privacy. I do not like some cameras looking down on me while travelling!

Let me give you some examples. Sometimes, young couples tend to snuggle up a bit on the back of buses like our baby Ben. It’s so bloody irritating to have the cameras there. And then, the camera is place at a high position, vertically filming down. Ladies, do you like people looking at your cleavage all the time? No right? Prove: I had this friend who got slightly irritated when the the caucasian guy keep looking down on hers.

And what if you are looking at a confidential document on the bus. Definitely the person beside you will find it hard to look at the document- reflections and highly noticeable if they were to look in the direction- but for this, the camera is facing directly down at the top and you wouldn’t even know who is looking at your document. Besides, corporations are using Blackberry more widely, which means that people carry their emails and stuff out of their offices. Some of which may be confidential. Its all about invasion of privacy!

And theres the IMF and WB meeting going on now. Foreigners from all over would be coming down to town. We know Americans place a lot of emphasis on privacy, and now, we are invading peoples’ privacy by monitoring them constantly even while they travel. The delegates from aside, there are the CSOs. Some may choose to take the “excellent” public transport system and then realized that they are treated like criminals being monitored the whole time.

Whatever the reason is- vandalism or terrorist- it is the governments’ responsibility to find an alternative which doesn’t cross the line.

Firstly, being a student, I want to WISH ALL TEACHERS A HAPPY TEACHERS DAY!

Back to my main topic, ERPs. Crappiest system in the world. Ever since Singapore switched to this technology (first in the world to do so), the government has been adding these gantries all over the island. Some time later, you may even see it right at the carpark of your house (some already do). So everytime you drive you get charged. How smart. I mean, they are the only government in the world which can turn brand new cars into scrap metal.

The reason for all the gantries as the government put it, “it’s obvious”. Nonsense. Does it really help ease traffic? No. What reports do you have to prove it works? Lesser cars? Are you using the theory ‘all else equals’? If you are, then stop making false statistics. All the ERP gantries just help the government make more money. And what is the money used for? Repairing the roads? Building more highways? All no. They are used to make the parts of the road meant for the IMF members - who have no relations to Singapore in the road users point of view - look pretty.

How can large recently developed cities like Shanghai cope with the traffic, and little Singapore here with lots of tax money from the roads not able to?

The government said: Try to get out earlier and use the roads during non peak periods so that you won’t be charged. The charge is to ease traffic during peak periods. Use the public transport. Mole says: Bullshit!

Firstly, we pay so much money to use the bloody roads and now you tell us we have to pay even more just to use it at certain times? What nonsense? You think Singaporeans lead the life that Australians lead? You think we have so much time? You think this country is a village? What nonsense! Singaporeans are already so short of time because we have to work so hard to pay so much nonsense taxes and now you ask us to adjust our times so you can save money on building more roads, at the same time earn more money. At a fast paced society like Singapore, it is impossible to change the schedules. Time is so packed. Try telling all the employers they are supposed to allow some workers to get to work early and go home early. “Boss! I am at work at 6am when all our customers are sleeping! Can I go home at 3pm while my colleagues are busy serving customers?” Then, there are also the people in the service sector. Are they supposed to break during the peak periods? No. So, there is actually no change in traffic conditions at all. LTA is just making more and more money.

What about using public transport? What crap. The stupid waiting time and the crowded public transport totally puts people off. Same for the service sectors. They can’t be taking public transport to their destinations! You must be joking to even think of that.

All in all, the excuses of having ERP does not make sense unless the government says: We are having ERPs so we can make more revenue.
