Seeing hope

Today, I found out for myself what makes a teacher happy, that is seeing a student finding his goal. Even though I am not a full time teacher, and this student has not been close to me, I felt somehow happy, that he found what he wants.

Occasionally, I would have students and teachers asking me whether I would be converting to full-time teaching, naturally, my answer would be no, although I do not say it sometimes. As a business student, I would naturally look at things from a business point of view, and would weigh the benefits, mostly in terms of money. Therefore, I would not be a teacher for I do not see any monetary returns soon and my stint as a relief teacher is just to pass time and experience what it is like to be a teacher. So today, when this particular boy came to me and asked me the same question, I just replied a plain no. However, he went on to ask why and started telling me his plans of becoming a teacher, and joining NIE after his "O" levels. That shows something. He has already locked his goal in mind and is prepared to go for it. I remember the same boy 3 years ago, when he first joined the school, and I just graduated the year before. A mischievous trouble maker, whom I used to dislike, and until today, remains as mischievous.

It does not matter how naughty he is, but the matter of the fact that he has a goal in his life, is particularly important. At least he isn't like those other students who just hang around waiting for life to pass them. Even though I was happy for my brother that he knows what he wants, he did not show the passion for it. It was just plain talk and I became the one who source for information. Whereas this boy, he has the flame in him, which I believe would one day lead to his goal.
